Regular Outings, Incursions and Excursions
Regular Outings
Regular outings are a valued part of our educational program at Discovery. They offer children meaningful opportunities to explore their local community alongside educators, visiting places such as the library, nearby parks, local shops, or even a café for a warm hot chocolate.
These experiences extend learning beyond the classroom, encouraging cognitive, social, and emotional development through real-world interactions that build confidence, independence, and curiosity. Regular outings also strengthen children’s sense of belonging, community and cultural connection, while supporting physical health through active movement and outdoor play.
Incursions
Incursions bring the world into our centres, allowing children to engage in exciting and educational experiences within the comfort and safety of their familiar environment.
Throughout the year, Discovery services host a range of enriching incursions for children of all ages. These programs are carefully selected to complement our curriculum and inspire learning through creativity, exploration, and fun. Some examples include:
- Emergency service visits
- African drumming sessions
- Living Safely with Pets program
- Kindergarten Teacher (three year old room)
- Water safety program
- Museum in a Van
- Recycle Man
- Farmyard and reptile encounters
Excursions
Excursions provide children with unique opportunities to experience the wider world and extend on their learning through new environments and community connections. These outings are special events beyond our regular community visits and support children’s social and emotional development through collaboration, problem-solving, and new social experiences.
Excursions also build children’s confidence and independence as they explore and navigate unfamiliar settings with trusted educators.
A favourite annual excursion for all Discovery centres is our bus trip to Kew Traffic School, where children learn about road safety and practise riding bikes responsibly in a safe, engaging environment.
Specialty Programs
Hey Dee Ho
For our younger children (0–3 years), Discovery offers a weekly play-based music program facilitated by Hey Dee Ho.
This interactive experience introduces children to musical concepts such as beat, rhythm, tempo, and pitch through songs, props, puppets, costumes, and instruments.
Each week, the same presenter visits to build trusting relationships with the children while exploring a new theme in fun and imaginative ways.
Hey Dee Ho presenters hold current Working With Children Checks, and the program is audited regularly to ensure it continues to meet Discovery’s high standards of quality and engagement.
Little Sports Heroes
For our three- and four-year-old kindergarten children, we offer an energetic sports program delivered by Little Sports Heroes.
This program introduces children to a variety of sports through focused three- to four-week blocks, supporting skill development, coordination, and teamwork while keeping activities fresh and engaging.
All instructors hold Working With Children Checks, and the program is reviewed regularly to ensure it aligns with Discovery’s expectations for safety, inclusion, and educational value.
Cheeky Monkeys Yoga
As part of our wellbeing focus, kindergarten children participate in weekly yoga sessions run by Cheeky Monkeys Yoga.
These sessions make mindfulness, movement, and calmness fun, encouraging children to express themselves while building focus and body awareness.
Cheeky Monkeys aim to empower children to develop lifelong wellbeing skills, helping them grow with confidence, resilience, and self-awareness.
All instructors have Working With Children Checks, and the program is audited regularly to maintain Discovery’s commitment to quality and safety.
Early Learning Languages Australia (ELLA)
ELLA is an innovative, play-based digital language learning program designed for kindergarten-aged children.
At Discovery, our four-year-old kindergarten children learn Mandarin using The Polyglots app — a program developed to introduce language and cultural awareness in a fun, interactive way.
The ELLA program supports early communication, cognitive development, and global understanding, fostering curiosity and open-mindedness in young learners.
Dr Chan’s Fortnightly Visits
One of our most valued partnerships is with Dr Chan, who visits each Discovery service on a fortnightly basis.
This program provides convenient, on-site access to a trusted doctor for both children and educators.
Dr Chan offers services such as immunisations and general check-ups, ensuring health and wellbeing are easily supported within our community.
Appointments are bulk billed, and families are welcome to attend with their child, or an educator your child knows and trusts can accompany them.
Medicare cards are required to access this service.
